CRECHE Clubs
There are several clubs coordinated and sponsored by CRECHE in which boys and girls can participate. These clubs are scheduled to meet on Club Fridays, which are the first Fridays of the month, at Holy Cross. Meetings will start at 10:00 a.m. with a devotion, and clubs will meet downstairs in Donovan Hall immediately following the devotion. Club meetings conclude at Noon with the Angelus.
If you are interested in starting a club, contact Cecelia Harkins. The following clubs have been submitted and approved for meetings beginning September 4th.
Lego Club
Welcome all Lego fanatics, boys and girls!
For 2 whole hours, you can play Legos with your friends. We will have a good collection of Duplos and Legos, so you can leave yours at home. If you run out of things to make, we will have different ideas and projects to get you going again. We will even have a video recorder so we can make our own Lego videos.
We at the Lego Club know life is busy. That's why we don't need anyone to attend all the time.
Just sign up on the 'master list' so we know the maximum amount of fanatics we may have. We want to be ready.
Hey Moms, also we'd prefer kids older than 4, but if you want to hang out with your younger child, come on by.
Contact Lori Wielgos or Michele Wood for more information.
History Club 5th to 8th Grade
This club will use simulations activities to introduce students to time periods in American History.
What is a role-playing simulation? Role-playing simulations attempt to put the student in the position of a person in a particular time and place. All of the simulations involve group problem solving and conflict resolution. The students are given a character sheet, which describes the groups needs and desires, a brief description of the historical problem and a copy of the rules of the game. The individual assumes the role they choose and makes decisions as the character would make during that particular time period. No pre-set limits are placed on a particular person's choices as long as they are within the realm of what was historically possible.
We all know that students remember better what they do than what they heard or read about, so these simulations allow for an unforgettable experience, which will bring history alive for them. After the simulation is completed the moderator will lead a discussion of why things happened the way they did and how they might have turned out differently in the game or actually did turn out differently in other countries. This debriefing period is the most valuable portion of the activity. Students will be eager to participate because they were active stakeholders in the decisions made instead of passive listeners hearing about other people's problems from long ago. The activities build historical understanding, empathy for the viewpoints of others and group decision-making.
Please contact Jan Herwaldt to sign up.
Art Club
The Art Club will meet on First Friday Club days at Holy Cross. It is open to boys and girls ages 7-10. The Art Club will be a combination art appreciation/art technique class. Each month, the students will learn about an artist's life and works. They will then be able to practice the artist's technique and create their own works of art in the featured style of the month. Parents of participants will be expected to volunteer to help lead at least once during the year. All lesson plans and art supplies will be provided. There is no preparation or art experience/talent needed to help lead a session. A fee of $5 per participant per semester is requested to help cover the cost of art materials. Please contact Michelle Peters with any questions or to sign up.
Yearbook Club
This will be the first year of Yearbook Club. Completly new and unscripted! We will start out simple and as interest grows so will our club.
This club is open to mature 12 year olds and older teens. Throughout the year, we will be responsible for taking pictures and notes of all CRECHE events, including meetings and field trips. Access to a digital camera and /or desire to keep notes / comments in written form are important. Computer skills will also be important. We will meet on first Friday club days at Holy Cross, however, a little more time will be needed toward May and June as we pull it all together.
Our goal is to provide each family with a simple pictoral record of the 2009-2010 CRECHE Homeschool year and families. Our goal is to keep the Yearbook cost to around $10-$15, which means the yearbooks will be bound in a simple spiral (that will be borrowed from the school). In trying to keep this as simple as possible this year, the club will interview the families and take their pictures. We will then create family pages on the computer using Print Master or another similar program.
Moms and Dads are invited to be a part of the fun as well. There is a special need for a co-chair.
If your child is interested in participating, or you are interested in helping as well, please contact Jessy Gilligan.
Little Flowers

Little Flowers is a Catholic girls' club open to all CRECHE girls between the ages of 4 and 10, which meets in members' homes one evening each month. It is so named after St. Therese of Lisieux, the "Little Flower", whose way to God was paved with little expressions of love and sacrifice, and whose desire was to present to God the "flowers" of many souls. Each month we discuss a virtue, a saint that exemplifies that virtue, a flower, and have a related craft. (Snacks are shared too.) Parents (usually moms) are expected to accompany their daughters, taking turns hosting/leading the lessons, and helping the younger ones especially with crafts.
For more information or to sign up your daughter, please contact Sylvia Keppel.
